7 week old new addition to Lion Guardians!

Category: life in camp | Date: Dec 01 2008 | By: lionguardians

Meet Tizo, our newest addition to the Lion Guardians family! His name is short for ‘matatizo’ which means troubles in Swahili - we hope he is going to keep us out of trouble! Traditionally Boerboels have been used to hunt lions, so we hope he will help the Lion Guardians with their tracking.

He is 7 weeks old and just arrived at camp last night so has spent the day getting used to his new home and meeting everyone. He seems to like it very much here!

He is very cute!

He’s absolutely adorable (for now!). Is this dog intended to help the lion guardians. I just saw that Asuka has introduced a turkish dog in the Mara as a guard dog. you can read about the species and it’s behaviour on the Cheetah Conservation Blog.

Aw, how precious! Of course I hope he takes to the bold job of tracking lions soon enough! Shouldn’t be a problem though, from what I hear bush dogs are fearless! ;)

Paula - I’m curious where you had read about the introduction of a turkish guard dog in the Mara.

Anatolian shepards have been used in southern Africa for years, to help protect livestock. It’s good to learn that Kenya may be finally adopting this practice.

Duma, if you click on blogs at the top of this page, the blog page will come up. Then go down towards the bottom and click on Cheetah. When the cheetah blogs come up go to the bottom of that page and click on “old posts.” That is where they discuss the dogs. I just found it. Hope this helps.

This new puppy is too cute!! I wish I could reach into my computer screen and hold him for a few minutes! In the USA our puppies get “puppy shots” (a series of three), and then boosters every year, along with rabies, and where I live, rattlesnake shots. If your dogs get shots, do we need to send some extra money to help with this, or is there a vet who volunteers and you don’t have to pay for vaccinations?

This is what I was looking for, on the guard dog in the Mara. Click on the November issue, if interested.

But thank you, Hashi Hanta. I had worked with one of the CCF dogs in South Africa.

Oh my gosh he is gorgeous! I hope he can grow strong and brave to help you all…………I love his little knub of a tail!!!!

Thanks for your comments - we have passed them on (in the form of strokes), and he responded with some playful licks! So far he is a little scared of murrans, but he has met some of the Lion Guardians and we hope they will all become good friends soon!
