New location for Lion Guardians

Category: life in camp | Date: Dec 17 2008 | By: lionguardians

We are in the process of establishing a new camp on Eselenkei group ranch, where we are going to start the Lion Guardians program. I have just been to visit Eselenkei, to see the place that we will be locating our camp, and we were very lucky to be able to stay at nearby Porini. Porini is a tented camp for tourists located north of Amboseli National Park. It is one of those amazing natural places that you would want to visit on vacation. It is located in a protected area of bush full of wildlife. Birds like the White bellied Go Away bird entertain you as you have your breakfast, and the views are beautiful.

We were treated like VIPs by the staff at Porini. I will never forget the hospitality of the guys I met, and I wish that I could have met them earlier. If I had, my life would have been more fun filled! I am very much looking forward to expanding the Lion Guardians to this new area.

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me, but to see some photos of this beautiful place you can go to the Porini camp website.

Back in camp

Category: life in camp | Date: Jun 12 2008 | By: lionguardians

I have just been at home visiting my family, and am now back in camp after spending six days away. It feels like I have been away for a whole month - especially because I don’t normally leave camp, not even for weekends, so now that I’m back in the office I don’t know where to start!

It felt strange to be home and things seemed quite new to me. But whatever may have changed at home, I know what I have been up to: helping my community and the lions that desperately need me.

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me, so I can’t introduce the person who has shaped my life and given me love whenever I needed it - the love from a mother that is always present when you need it. So instead I am posting photos of the lions that I work to save.

As I grow up one thing is clear in my mind. A message from my mum; one day you will be a great person. Just work hard in whatever you do and it will certainly pay off. This is the inspiration that I always have at the back of my mind, when I am working to help conserve the lions. Thank you mum; no one is like you.

Fantastic facilities

Category: life in camp | Date: May 18 2008 | By: lionguardians

Hello, Amy here. As Antony is out collecting forms from the Lion Guardians today I thought I would briefly switch careers from photographer/media stooge to estate agent and show you some of the fantastic features of our camp….

Here we have a delightful one bedroom residence, complete with a charming terrace area to the front of the property, as well as a convenient outdoor storage unit, perfect for placing lighting equipment, for your late night tooth brushing requirements. The residence also features handy outdoor clothes drying facilities. It does have the occasional night time visitor, but these unwanted guests are almost always friendly and simply require shoo-ing away with a bright torch.

The photograph below shows the bathroom facilities - complete with shower unit and toilet. The holes in the walls allow for great ventilation, and previous residents have only rarely reported having to share the facilities with spiders, scorpions, monkeys and other friendly visitors. Hot water is available on request.

The local area also features a fantastic office space, with all the mod cons needed in a contemporary working environment - desks, chairs, shelves, electricity and even the occasional internet connection. It also features a number of decorative carnivore skulls, Maasai spears, and even a guitar, for those reflective moments away from the desk. What more could the modern conservation worker require?
