I would once again like to remind all our readers that you can buy lovely Lion Guardians Christmas cards right here on the blog! All the profits go to the Lion Guardians, so please, wherever you are in the world, buy as many as you can and tell all your friends about them too! Maybe you could even buy a stock, and help us by selling them at your school or place of work?
There are 3 designs, one is of Lion Guardian Olubi tracking lions, the second is a female lion in Nempakai’s pride with her cub, and the third design is a young Maasai girl from one of the communities that the Lion Guardians program works with. The cards are high quality glossy laminated and the message inside reads ‘Season’s Greetings’.
The cost is $22 (that’s approx £13) for 12 cards (4 of each design), and this includes airmail postage and packing of the cards (and envelopes) to your address. Just put a number in the QTY box next to ‘Christmas card pack’ to say how many packs you would like to purchase, and click on DONATE.
Please Note
As well as making your donation for the cards, you MUST also write a request for the cards on this blog by adding a comment so that we can trace you to obtain your address for postage. We cannot trace you from the donation box alone. Thank you!
We hope you like the designs, and we hope we can raise a lot of money for the Guardians, so please buy some now, and spread the word!!
THANK YOU! Your support is helping save the remaining wild lions in Kenya.

Leopard speared?
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Jan 15 2009 | By: lionguardians
Yesterday we received a call saying that a leopard had been killed in Kimana, a neighbouring ranch to ours. We rushed to go and see what had happened. When we arrived we found that it was in fact a cheetah (the two are often confused).
It had been speared and its paws removed. Our first thought was that the claws must have been taken to sell at the market, as it was the day before Kimana market day, and this was where we were offered lion teeth and claws a month ago.
Game scouts removed the head, so that no one would remove the teeth to sell them too. It is very worrying that this trade of animal parts seems to be becoming more and more common here.

Have you ever heard a cheetah before?
Category: life in camp | Date: Jan 12 2009 | By: lionguardians
Yesterday we were out looking for lions with the film crew that are staying with us at the moment, and we heard a strange noise. At first we thought it was a bird, but we followed the sound and as we got closer we discovered it was a cheetah, walking around on the plains and making such a loud noise!
We couldn’t tell if it was a male or female and wondered whether it was a mother looking for her cubs. After a while we saw there was another cheetah in the area too - perhaps they were mating. The film crew were recording the cheetah’s sounds - you can listen to them by clicking on the link below.
The cheetahs were very close to some bomas, and were making a very loud noise, so I hope they did not attract too much attention from livestock owners in the area.

Cheetah attacks reduced
Category: Community work, Lion Guardian reports | Date: Jun 30 2008 | By: lionguardians
As always we held our end of month meeting where Lion Guardians from all parts of the ranch come together to discuss what has happened in their areas over the month.
Most of the Guardians reported less lion sightings, except for Melubo and Kapande who have both been able to track lions in their areas and report their locations to herders so as to avoid conflict between the livestock and lions.
We are glad to report that the cheetahs that were a menace for the first two weeks of this month seem to have reduced their attacks on livestock, which must be at least in part due to Olubi’s help advising the community on better herding practices. We are happy to say that this has meant that the community did not take any action against the cheetahs.

Community threatens to kill cheetahs
Category: Lion Guardian reports | Date: Jun 23 2008 | By: lionguardians
Today I went to visit a community that is complaining of cheetahs attacking and taking away their goats and sheep during the day. Livestock owner Melubo Nteke showed me one of his goats that had been injured by a cheetah when they were being herded during the day.
I asked him who had been herding the goats and he told me that they were being looked after by young children. He told me that in his community livestock are often herded by children who are less than 15 years of age, who cannot chase away carnivores when they attack livestock. Here is the owner of the goat, who was very upset and angry.
Lion Guardian Olubi is currently in the area trying to help with the situation. From the community’s point of view, all that they want is for the problematic animals to be killed. Livestock is their only source of livelihood and if a group of carnivores starts killing their livestock then they would want them dead. Here is Olubi.
Olubi is now advising them on how they can alter their herding practices so that their goats will not be attacked, and hopefully will bring an end to the problem before any carnivores are killed.
